I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 29 just after we went into lockdown in 2020. Initially I was told that there was no way I had cancer because I was under 30. I was then told by a GP who wasn’t my doctor, that if I was her patient she would not refer me, she carried out my examination. I had to fight to get my referral and in my notes it was said that the only reason I was being referred was to put my mind at rest.
I was diagnosed with her2 positive breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy, 2 egg harvesting session,18 round of chemo and 10 rounds of radiotherapy. I was the youngest person in all of my treatment and found it really difficult that there was nobody to relate too in the leaflets I was given or around me in treatment. I had nurses presume my records were wrong because they had never met someone my age with breast cancer.
I had the majority of my treatment isolated alone away from friends and family because of the pandemic. I was only allowed to get a taxi or ambulance transport to the hospital and back during lockdown. I finished my chemo in November 2021 and because I hadn’t been put on the right medication to keep me in menopause I fell pregnant the month after naturally.
When I found out I was pregnant I stopped all treatment/medication to give my child the best chance as Tamoxifen had a higher risk of birth defects. In October 2022 my son was born healthy, he turns 3 this October. I have just had my 5 year all clear scan although that doesn’t mean I’m done with medication and scans I count myself very lucky to have got to this point.
