I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 9th August this year, despite having a lump two years ago and given the all clear by a routine mammogram. I had to check and listen to my body as time went on. Fast forward to now Yesterday, I started my first round of chemotherapy. I began the day filled with fear, wondering what was to come, but also with determination.
Choosing this path wasn’t easy, I wrestled with myself, had deep talks with my family and closest friends, and finally made the decision, bolstered by the support of loved ones and my faith in God. For two hours, I sat comfortably in a chair as chemo drugs with names I can’t pronounce flowed into my body. Strangely, this part felt straightforward compared to the mental and emotional journey I’d been on to get here. But now, I want to share my story openly because I believe there’s so much we can all learn from each other’s experiences, and perhaps my journey will resonate with someone who needs it.
If there’s one thing I hope to impart, it’s this: Check your breasts and know your body. Listen to it. Our bodies are always trying to tell us something. No matter your age, young or old – make checking your breasts a habit, monthly. Early detection is so crucial; it gives you a fighting chance.
